Sermons

Seekers recognizes that any member of the community may be called upon by God to give us the Word, and thus we have an open pulpit with a different preacher each week. Sermons preached at Seekers, as well as sermons preached by Seekers at other churches or events, are posted here, beginning with the most recent.

Kathy Cochrane: Creation — God Saw That It Was Good

April 19, 1998

But, you say — “well it says later that we’re supposed to be those with dominion.” Hold on my friends. Not until we comprehend the totality of all of Creation being seen and valued as good by God, can we even approach comprehending the idea of dominion.

Martha Phillips: New Life

April 12, 1998

Here I have a daffodil bulb. She was old and wrinkled. She thought: “I know what’s going to happen to me. I’m going to be buried in the ground just like those other bulbs and that will be the end of me.” Months passed and one day the earth began to warm around the little bulb and she started to stir. She felt a green shoot pushing through the earth and soon it poked through the ground and lapped up the sunshine and rain. She woke with a trumpet and crown of yellow petals. It was her resurrection body. She never knew she could be so beautiful, and to think that she thought she was dead. No matter how old, wrinkled or blemished we think we are there is always the potential for redemption.

Peter Bankson: Finding My Way in the Wilderness

March 22, 1998

Our story begins in the Garden of Eden. Our destination is the New Jerusalem, the City of God. Today we are on the way, where we can’t see where we are heading or where we’ve been. All three characters are essential parts of the Parable of the Loving Parent; and all three story lines are essential paths in the wilderness. We need to honor the faithful, no matter which path they be on.

Margreta Silverstone: Wilderness

March 15, 1998

I also turned to the work of my hands as a way to work out my grief. This quilt was begun just a week after my miscarriage. I had planned to go in mid-October to my parents to tell them the good news about the pregnancy and to spend time quilting with my mother and other friends. I ended up going home to Lynden and sharing my grief; and I began to work on the quilt.

Rachel Halterman: Is This the Promised Land?

March 08, 1998

As I reflect on the subject of community and Seekers, particularly in connection with our pending search for new space, I am struck by the parallels the story of Abram offers. For example, can we imagine the potential of Seekers as community to become our promised land?
