Sermons

Seekers recognizes that any member of the community may be called upon by God to give us the Word, and thus we have an open pulpit with a different preacher each week. Sermons preached at Seekers, as well as sermons preached by Seekers at other churches or events, are posted here, beginning with the most recent.

The Feast of the Reign of Christ

As a way to begin, it came to me of the importance of stories and how Native Americans and other groups throughout history have told stories about their lives or community as a way to communicate themes and ideas to each other. This is a tradition that is often lost in our very Western linear world but that our Native American brothers and sisters still retain as part of their culture. When I have been at meetings with tribal groups, I am often reminded that stories can be important and speak at a deeper level to us.

The 21st Sunday After Pentecost

I grew up thinking that saints were either Christian martyrs who died horrible deaths or people who made miracles happen. Then I realized that the Bible regards any Christian as a saint — someone who is consecrated or dedicated to God. Here at Seekers, I would say that our membership commitment is enough to qualify you as a saint because it puts us on a path to be intentional about our quest for God.

The 19th Sunday After Pentecost

Unlike our friend Paul speaking to the Thessalonians, my prayer and my sermon are not only an offering to God, but an offering to each and all of you, without whom my life would not be possible. Recently, the day’s reflection from Inward/Outward was a quote from one of Gordon’s sermons – “A church is a group of people collapsing into God and collapsing into one another.” I believe that, and I hope that some of what I have to say illuminates that as I bring you my reflections at this juncture in my life, which like my life, and the questions I’ve been asking myself forever, go from here to there and back again.

“….then Jesus said to them, “Give to the Emperor that which belongs to the Emperor, and to God that which belongs to God.”

Thus for me, and perhaps for you, the question comes: what is it that belongs to God? And today we specifically ask if and how re-commitment or commitment to this particular Christian community, this small part of the larger body of Christ, is for us “one of the things of God.”

For the last few weeks, our readings from the Hebrew scriptures have kept us walking around in the Sinai desert with the Israelites. Like them, we have been wondering how to live in a strange and often terrifying place, where rules that we used to be able to take for granted no longer seem to apply. How shall we live when the economy is unpredictable? How shall we live when our political system is in gridlock? How shall we live when so many of our brothers and sisters suffer poverty, homelessness, abuse, violence, war, and oppression? How shall we live when death and disease seem to lurk around every corner?
