The Fourth Sunday after Pentecost

A simple definition if the word “to seek” may be: an attempt to find. But reading into more definitions, they begin to emphasize an “engaged longing” to find. Going yet a step further, I found that in seeking God, it is a longing to be in his presence. That we are to seek to find his “face”. I thought to myself, “there are as many different versions of seeking, and seeing, her “face” as there are beings that have ever lived, are living now and those that will come into this world. It is also important to point out that the message is to continually, constantly seek to he in her presence.

Today I would like to share with you how the divine light has guided me to search and seek out the face of God. How my parents’ infinite love and the guidance of my elders lead me to live among the Nicaraguan people. My journey is one of seeking to find God’s by seeing life through their eyes, and being in relationship with them.

The Third Sunday after Pentecost

Who has the authority? That question has come up a lot for me. Like many kids in my culture of origin, I was raised by authoritarian parents. There was never any question about who was the boss of me. It was my parents – until I reached adolescence and began to be the boss of myself. I wasn’t a good boss because, when a child grows up just following the orders of her parents and other designated adults, she doesn’t learn to trust her own, inner moral authority.

The Second Sunday after Pentecost

Deuteronomy 5:12: Observe the sabbath day and keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you.2 Corinthians 4:6-7 For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us.Mark 2:27 “… the Sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the Sabbath.”As we mentioned last week, Celebration Circle has decided to change the name of this worship “season” in our life together to “Telling the Story.” We decided to do this to help us all remember that during these weeks our worship will focus on the time after Pentecost, a time when the early followers of Jesus were calling forth families of faith in many places, traveling to new lands, and telling the stories of their encounters with God in new ways to different cultures. This year our chosen theme for “Telling the Story” is to ponder the idea that grace is enough.

A Service in the Style of Taizé for the season of Telling the Story 2018

Trinity

Several times each year, Seekers Church takes time out from its regular preaching schedule for a service of chant, prayer and reflection modeled on the worship of the Taizé Community in France. This Sunday was one such time. Repeating the chants together until they die away into the silence provides rest for our world-weary spirits as well as an opportunity for individual reflection on our faith journeys. As we joined in spirit with the monks at Taizé, we were nourished by their faithfulness as well as by their music.

Pentecost

It’s Pentecost!

So how come you are not all wearing red?

Where are your tongues of fire headbands?

Where are the red balloons?

Why didn’t we have a big potluck breakfast before church?

Ok, you are all looking a bit skeptical. Are you wondering, what’s the big deal? We’ve never done anything special for Pentecost here at Seekers.

After all, we’re not some Pentecostalist church, being slain in the spirit and speaking in tongues.

We’re not Roman Catholic or even high church Episcopalians. So why should we make a big deal out of Pentecost?
