Seekers recognizes that any member of the community may be called upon by God to give us the Word, and thus we have an open pulpit with a different preacher each week. Sermons preached at Seekers, as well as sermons preached by Seekers at other churches or events, are posted here, beginning with the most recent.

Feel free to use what is helpful from these sermons. We only ask that when substantial portions are abstracted or used in a written work, please credit Seekers Church and the author, and cite the URL.
Releasing and Going Forward in Trust by Elizabeth Gelfeld

Eleventh Sunday After Pentecost
The context of the story we read today from Luke 13, about the woman healed on the Sabbath, is that Jesus is on his journey to Jerusalem. This began with Luke 9:51. “When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem.”
As he travels with his disciples, he teaches and tells many parables, he heals people and casts out demons, he visits Martha and Mary, he denounces the Pharisees and lawyers. The crowd of people following him grows to thousands.

Tenth Sunday After Pentecost
The sermon this morning is meant to continue our community conversations about the Seekers September 14 Day of Prayer and Conversation. I am a member of the four-person planning team for that day, together with Ellie Benedict, Mary Mehala, and John Morris. We meet regularly to give shape to the time we’ll have together that Sunday.
Seekers Church is coming up on our 50th Anniversary. There is always reason to celebrate when important anniversaries like this one comes up. And at the same time, big anniversaries are good opportunities not only to look back, but to look at where we are now, and what we can envision our future could be. As Erica Lloyd captured so well in her sermon last month, planning this retreat has been a response to our awareness of this threshold year:

Ninth Sunday After Pentecost
Here’s the beginning of our reflection passage for this season, from Richard Rohr:
“The Crucified and Risen Christ uses the mistakes of the past to create a positive future, a future of redemption instead of retribution. He does not eliminate or punish the mistakes. He uses them for transformative purposes.”
This reflection illustrates the very interesting theme of “Divine Recycling.”

Seventh Sunday After Pentecost
Street Sense offered the word this Sunday. Street Sense elevates voices on poverty issues and creates economic opportunities for people experiencing homelessness. With support from Roy Barber and Leslie Jacobson, a group of Street Sense vendors told their stories in song and spoken word. Street Sense is also a biweekly newspaper sold on the street by the vendors as a means of support.
