Sermons

Seekers recognizes that any member of the community may be called upon by God to give us the Word, and thus we have an open pulpit with a different preacher each week. Sermons preached at Seekers, as well as sermons preached by Seekers at other churches or events, are posted here, beginning with the most recent.

Marjory Zoet Bankson: Headquarters or Home Base?

July 4, 2004

Jesus sent his disciples out on pairs, advising them to stay where they are welcomed and not to move around. I have always identified with the disciples in this story, going out with the good news that all are welcome at God’s table. However, this time, as we move into our new building, I am struck by Jesus’ invitation to become a householder, welcoming those who come toward us with a message of “Peace.” Can we offer space without demanding credentials first? What will it take to welcome the stranger?

Keith Seat: “When We Get to Carroll Street”: The Future is Now

June 27, 2004

I was asked to preach the first sermon at Carroll Street, and I have been working on this sermon for a while At first, all I could think of was what this sermon was not about. This sermon is not about how to build a building. Nor is this sermon about management principles we have picked up along the way. I want to talk with you, briefly, about how we got here, where it is we have gotten to, and where we go from here.

Dan Phillips: A Little Meal

June 6, 2004

After you have given up, it is hard to try again. This poor woman, this never-even-named widow who is ready to die, takes all she has and makes a meal for a man she does not know. How many of us could do that? How many of us have even been close to her situation? Hers was faith beyond even that of Elijah. She had to worry not just about herself, but about her son. She did what Elijah told her to do, and it ended well. The oil and the meal held out, and she and her son had enough to live on for a long time.

Marjory Zoet Bankson: Ten Things to Take Along

May 30, 2004

When I began working on this sermon, we were going to complete this Pentecost service and then walk five miles to our new home in Carroll Street. In addition to the cross and banner that we will carry whenever we do make that march, I began to identify other things we would be taking with us from our life as a congregation in this place. Each starts with a certain orthodoxy or Law and moves toward Spirit fulfillment. I call it Ten Things to Take Along. In each, there is the imprint of Pentecost.
