Sermons

Seekers recognizes that any member of the community may be called upon by God to give us the Word, and thus we have an open pulpit with a different preacher each week. Sermons preached at Seekers, as well as sermons preached by Seekers at other churches or events, are posted here, beginning with the most recent.

Prophets and Seekers by Kate Cudlipp

Epiphany 2007 bulletinJanuary 28, 2007

I would like to pause here to ask you to reflect for a moment on what you do not want to hear. Will you think of one or two situations in the world or in your life that feel so overwhelming that you simply want to turn away when the subject comes up? Can you name one of those aloud?

Now think about the Hebrew scripture for today. In it, Jeremiah heard what he did not want to hear: "I have appointed you as a prophet to the nations," God said. Jeremiah almost certainly knew what the role of a prophet demanded. In the modern-day words of Joan Chittister, being a prophet means "growing more ready to lose one’s life; being willing to be a stranger in one’s own land; staying where one does not fit; and being a sojourner, an alien to everything one has been raised to believe."

A Homily for Epiphany by Ken Burton

Epiphany 2007 bulletinJanuary 7, 2007

Epiphany is about the appearance, shining forth, or revelation of the Holy One. Within the Christian tradition, the term came to express the key understanding that Jesus of Nazareth was, in life, the shining forth or revelation of the Holy One to humankind in human form. From the post-Easter perspective, Epiphany is about how the Risen Christ is alive now and the fullest manifestation that we know of the Holy One. Jesus, both in his earthly life and as the Risen Christ, is God made manifest. The season is also about all the ways that we know the presence of the Holy One. One of the ways in which that happens is when, as Isaiah insists, we are called by name and told to not be afraid.

“I Hope He is the One” by David W. Lloyd

December 24, 2006

Who did Joseph talk to about his personal struggles after he found out that Mary was pregnant and angels came to see him? Perhaps only the donkey was around to listen. Here David Lloyd spins a possible answer. “I do not know why I am talking to you. Maybe it is because you have such big ears. Moreover, there is no one else I can talk to about it. I cannot even talk to her about some of it. “
