Sermons

Seekers recognizes that any member of the community may be called upon by God to give us the Word, and thus we have an open pulpit with a different preacher each week. Sermons preached at Seekers, as well as sermons preached by Seekers at other churches or events, are posted here, beginning with the most recent.

Selfishly Waiting for a Miracle by John Morris

I’ve given this sermon the name “Selfishly Waiting for a Miracle.”  The “selfish” part will be explained in due course; Advent is a time of waiting; and today’s Gospel reading reminds us how important the idea – the fact – of miracles was to the followers of Jesus.  In Matthew 11, we learn about the signs that Jesus points to, in answer to John’s question, “Are you the one?”  Most of them are miraculous, including this one: “The dead are raised.”

Season of Peace & Love by Aeren Martinez

In times of war countries focus all their energies into winning the conflict, and who can blame them after all if you are the victor you set the conditions for peace. But being the victor puts you in a superior position and when this happens, what negotiation is there? Peace is more than absence of war, the absence of conflict, or the absence of hate; peace is an abundance of equality, justice, and love.

Working Together: Restoring Hope by Peter Bankson

It’s been a long time since I read Haggai … but it didn’t take long once I got started.  It’s only 38 verses long. This time the context was important. The prophet Haggai records four dreams given to him over the course of four months in the year 520 BCE. At that point the Israelites had been back from their exile in Babylon for about 18 years. Folks had returned to their villages, rebuilt their homes and resumed their lives. But the temple in Jerusalem was still a pile of rubble. According to the tradition it was Haggai who got things moving to rebuild the temple in just four years. He must have been one of the memorable motivational speakers of his day.

Over against this imperial world, Jesus offered an alternative—the manna model of sharing so that each would have enough. Jesus took the side of the poor, knowing that if the poor were taken care of, all would be able to live. Whoever wants to be the first must be slave of all, he said—we are bound to serve one another.

No “They”, Only Us by Sandra Miller

Many of us probably struggled with taking the commitment vow today because the scope of that statement seemed too vast.  Some may have decided not to do so. Whether or not you committed today, to all of us I offer a reminder that we are each a ragged bit of cloth. Alone each of us could never hope to live fully into each facet our promise as a Seeker.
