Sermons

Seekers recognizes that any member of the community may be called upon by God to give us the Word, and thus we have an open pulpit with a different preacher each week. Sermons preached at Seekers, as well as sermons preached by Seekers at other churches or events, are posted here, beginning with the most recent.

Feel free to use what is helpful from these sermons. We only ask that when substantial portions are abstracted or used in a written work, please credit Seekers Church and the author, and cite the URL.

Race & Diversity – Bringing Together 4 Communities

2008 Pentecost bulletin

May 18, 2008

Today’s topic of race and diversity was a response to the United Church of Christ’s call to its churches to begin a sacred conversation in order to develop better understanding and to bring about  the healing of racial divides. For Seekers Church, while not a member of the UCC, it was a timely opportunity to reach out to the other congregations that also call our building their faith home.  It is a collaborative effort of Seekers, Covenant Christian Community, The Divinity Center for Better Living and The National Spiritual Science Center.  We are hoping to post the audio recording of the service and dialogue that followed in the next several weeks. To read the introduction to the sermon time please click on the read more link.

“Burn in Me Your Love” by the Artists Mission Group

2008 Pentecost bulletin

May 11, 2008

This service was prepared by the Artists Mission Group of Seekers Church.  Rather than a more traditional sermon we celebrated the coming of the Holy Spirit with personal stories offered by members of the Artists Mission Group in the style of InterPlay, and full participation by the community throughout our worship time together.

Worship in the style of Taize

2008 easter bulletin

May 4, 2008

Sprinkled like living water throughout the calendar and liturgical year Seekers Church celebrates the Divine Mystery in a service in the style of Taize. Our worship this Sunday was such a service filled with the sounds of silence, chanting, prayers of the community, sharing communion and hearing the word of God.

“The Day of Burnt Offerings is Over” by John Morris

2008 easter bulletin

April 27, 2008

Have you ever wondered what burnt offerings were, exactly?  I never did, until I began working with these readings.  So now I can tell you that a burnt offering is a sacrifice to God that is wholly consumed by fire; the Hebrew word is “olah”, the Greek word is formed from holos, whole, and kaustos, burnt.  Holos-kaustos . . . yes, that’s where we get the word “holocaust.”  And of what material were these offerings?  Portions of animal flesh, generally.  In this particular psalm, the singer promises, “I will sacrifice fat animals to you and an offering of rams; I will offer bulls and goats.”
