Sermons

Seekers recognizes that any member of the community may be called upon by God to give us the Word, and thus we have an open pulpit with a different preacher each week. Sermons preached at Seekers, as well as sermons preached by Seekers at other churches or events, are posted here, beginning with the most recent.

Feel free to use what is helpful from these sermons. We only ask that when substantial portions are abstracted or used in a written work, please credit Seekers Church and the author, and cite the URL.

The Second Sunday of Advent

Well, we’re entering the Advent season, and we heard today from the Gospel of Mark how John the Baptist prepared the way for the Lord, and made straight paths for him. “I baptize you with water,” John said, “but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

That’s an interesting theme – the idea that we sometimes enter a crucial turning point in our lives, and we know it because there’s a herald, a voice crying out – or just someone who says, “Listen to me, but don’t make the mistake of thinking I’m God. Why, I’m not even worthy to untie God’s sandals. I can make it easier for you to find God, and then I’ll get out of the way.”

The First Sunday of Advent

The word salvation is actively disliked by some of you because of bad experiences with some traditional expressions of Christianity. I want to recapture the word for Seekers because it carries the image of a big change. The salvation vision of Jesus is transformative, more than an endless series of small and often conflicting reforms. Salvation is moving from illness and injury to health whatever our physiological condition, however we are being mistreated. It helps to have a transformative vision even when we live into the work we do, the choices we make, whatever the complexities we know and don’t know, whatever our resources, limits, contingencies, and opportunities

The Feast of the Reign of Christ

As a way to begin, it came to me of the importance of stories and how Native Americans and other groups throughout history have told stories about their lives or community as a way to communicate themes and ideas to each other. This is a tradition that is often lost in our very Western linear world but that our Native American brothers and sisters still retain as part of their culture. When I have been at meetings with tribal groups, I am often reminded that stories can be important and speak at a deeper level to us.

The 21st Sunday After Pentecost

I grew up thinking that saints were either Christian martyrs who died horrible deaths or people who made miracles happen. Then I realized that the Bible regards any Christian as a saint — someone who is consecrated or dedicated to God. Here at Seekers, I would say that our membership commitment is enough to qualify you as a saint because it puts us on a path to be intentional about our quest for God.

The 19th Sunday After Pentecost

Unlike our friend Paul speaking to the Thessalonians, my prayer and my sermon are not only an offering to God, but an offering to each and all of you, without whom my life would not be possible. Recently, the day’s reflection from Inward/Outward was a quote from one of Gordon’s sermons – “A church is a group of people collapsing into God and collapsing into one another.” I believe that, and I hope that some of what I have to say illuminates that as I bring you my reflections at this juncture in my life, which like my life, and the questions I’ve been asking myself forever, go from here to there and back again.
