Sermons

Seekers recognizes that any member of the community may be called upon by God to give us the Word, and thus we have an open pulpit with a different preacher each week. Sermons preached at Seekers, as well as sermons preached by Seekers at other churches or events, are posted here, beginning with the most recent.

“Everyone Who Thirsts” by Kevin Barwick

Bulletin cover for Lent 2013March 24, 2013

Palm/Passion Sunday

Lent is a reminder, of sorts, of our deeper commitments to God. It bids us to ask questions like, Do we give up something or give in to something? Do we try harder or try less? Do we fight longer or surrender more? Do we do all these things or none of these things? Lent suggests practices that deepen our experiences, and calls us to new realities of Christian faith, or what our beloved Gordon Cosby called it, New realms of Being.

“The Prodigal Son and the Unrepentant Son” by John Morris

The 4th Sunday in Lent

I grew up with no religious education, because my parents didn’t believe in it…The prodigal son story first came to me in a song recorded by the Rolling Stones in 1968, when I was 14. I remember vividly everything about my early musical loves; listening to and playing music were the closest things to spiritual experiences I had. So, though it sounds unlikely, I can remember what I thought and felt when I first heard this song… I was moved and interested by this song. I did not know the story came from the bible. It sounded like a blues, a Southern tall tale, full of “poor boys” and “swine” and “famine comin’ in the land.”

“Money Matters” by Marjory Bankson

The Third Sunday in Lent

Today, I want to speak about money as a Lenten practice. How we deal with money is one of the hardest things to talk about in community or family. That makes it a likely place to expect a visit from the Devil, and that might make it a good place to confront our “functional atheism.”

The Second Sunday in Lent

Several times each year, Seekers Church takes time out from its regular preaching schedule for a service of chant, prayer and reflection modeled on the worship of the Taizé Community in France.
