Sermons

Seekers recognizes that any member of the community may be called upon by God to give us the Word, and thus we have an open pulpit with a different preacher each week. Sermons preached at Seekers, as well as sermons preached by Seekers at other churches or events, are posted here, beginning with the most recent.

“Journeys of the Spirit” by Will Ramsey

The Fifth Sunday in Lent

I picked this Sunday to speak because the lectionary reading sparked waves of thoughts about the spirit filled life. My thoughts bounced between the promise in Romans that a spirit filled mind leads to a life of peace and the promise in the twelve step programs which states that as a result of these steps we will have a spiritual awakening. It has been my vision and calling, if you will, to build bridges for people in twelve steps program to step safely into the Seekers community. Today I would like to describe what the twelve step programs have in common with our church and why it is important for our community to pay attention to their needs.

“Amazing Grace” by Jacqie Wallen

The Fourth Sunday in Lent

I haven’t always loved the hymn Amazing Grace. The version of this hymn that I was first familiar with was droning and rather mournful. It was sung by a church choir but it sounded as if it was being sung by a rag tag group of homeless men and women reluctantly forced to attend a worship service before being served in a Salvation Army soup kitchen. It had an air of unwelcome servitude about it and I found it more depressing than inspiring….Now I find my association of the hymn with soup kitchens enriches its inspirational quality for me. It is a song for people who have hit bottom and found God.

A Service in the Style of Taize for Lent, 2014

16 March 2014 The Second Sunday in Lent   Several times each year, Seekers Church takes time out from its regular preaching schedule for a service of chant, prayer and reflection modeled on the worship of the Taizé Community in France. This Sunday was one such time. Repeating the chants together until they die away into the silence provides rest for our world-weary spirits as well as an opportunity for individual reflection on our faith journeys. As we joined in spirit with the monks at Taizé, we were nourished by their faithfulness as well as by their music.

The First Sunday in Lent

So here we have one of the oldest images from one of the oldest stories ever told. It’s an image of creation as paradise. Creator God takes the human species and settles us in the garden. In another passage from Genesis, we find, “Then God said, ‘I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food,” strongly suggesting that animals were not ours for food. Humans are given their sources of sustenance, and we are told to take care of the garden, and all the denizens; indeed, humankind is given dominion over the animals. This was the vision of the peaceable kingdom.
But of course this is not how the story turned out.
