Sermons

Seekers recognizes that any member of the community may be called upon by God to give us the Word, and thus we have an open pulpit with a different preacher each week. Sermons preached at Seekers, as well as sermons preached by Seekers at other churches or events, are posted here, beginning with the most recent.

Feel free to use what is helpful from these sermons. We only ask that when substantial portions are abstracted or used in a written work, please credit Seekers Church and the author, and cite the URL.

Eighth Sunday After Pentecost

Here’s a Bible pop quiz: How many of Jesus’ miracles are recorded in all four Gospels? If your answer is “one,” you’re correct – and it’s the one we read today. The feeding of the five thousand is the only miracle story that made the cut. So the next question is, why? What does this story tell us about God, about Jesus, and about us, and who we are called to be in the world, that is so important that each of the four evangelists said, “Now, that story must be told.”

Seventh Sunday After Pentecost

SUMMARY

When I signed up to bring the Word on the first Sunday after the Guatemala pilgrimage, I knew that at least six of us would be together this year. I wanted to give us an opportunity to share some of our initial reflections. I’m glad to report that all 20 pilgrims are home safe and sound.

This year we worked with PAVA (Programa de Ayuda a los Vecinos del Altiplano) to help the people of Panimachavac, northeast of Tecpan with the early stages of preparing the site for constructing a new community library.

My sense is that we went to help… and we did just that: We may not have contributed much to the final building, but we helped them get something started, something that will change the way the people of Panimachavac live into the future.

Fifth Sunday After Pentecost

I invite you to close your eyes. You just found out you had the winning numbers for the mega billion jackpot. You are completely taken by surprise, and completed excited; anticipating getting that 2.3 billion dollar check! They said it’s waiting for you at the bank. You just have to go down and pick it up. You rush to the bank. The bank person and the Great Lottery King royally usher you back to the vault where the safety deposit boxes are. The “King” slowly and formally pulls out your box and, with a huge smile, hands you the key. Your heart is pounding in anticipation. You carefully insert the key and turn. The lid clicks open. You then lift the opening to find… to find… that it’s EMPTY!

Fourth Sunday After Pentecost

Good morning. I’d like to ask you to close your eyes and breathe in and out. Just pay attention to your breath as you inhale and exhale. Now open your eyes and together let’s take a deep breath in and let it out with a sigh. Let’s do that again: deep breath in, and out with a sigh.

This simple practice can be very helpful in bringing us into the present and making us aware of the centrality of our physicality.

Third Sunday After Pentecost

Good morning.

On this Sunday ten years ago, I was standing here giving the first sermon in our newly-renovated building, for which we had just obtain a temporary certificate of occupancy. I began:

“Here we are at our new building on Carroll Street! Isn’t it great to finally be here? What a remarkable journey it’s been. We can now officially retire the phrase ‘When We Get to Carroll Street’!”
