Let us pray.

Holy One,

As we sit with our memories of that gloriously beautiful and most awful day of 9/11/2001 and as we reflect on the deep caring and courage and also the ugly, visceral hatred that was evident that day and in its aftermath, even to this day,  we ask your help in learning these ways of living our complex lives in your Creation, practiced by Buddhists all over the world.

God, we cry out for justice. 
What our government is doing is madness. It is evil. 
And we ask for your power to tear it all down.
We pray for DC, his daughters, and his partner.
We pray for the thousands of others like them all over this country.
Lord, hear their cry.

Some of you know I volunteer as a Haitian Creole translator for the Amica Center, an immigrant rights organization headquartered here in DC. On Thursday I translated for a lawyer and a Haitian immigrant, I‘ll refer to him by his initials, DC, as they discussed his case.

Holy One, please open our hearts, and the hearts of our leaders, to the terrible inequities in health care in our country. Most of us in this sanctuary are privileged to enjoy excellent medical services, but that is entirely due to our social standing. Millions of our fellow citizens are denied adequate, affordable health care. Poverty and discrimination are not only tolerated but accepted as normal. In the U.S., health care is not a right for everyone, but a privilege for those who can afford it.

Help us stand up for those who are suffering, and discover what we can say and do to help them, and help our country join the 78 countries across world that offer universal health care.…

Let us pray.

Holy Spirit,
Breath of life,
you moved over the waters at the beginning of creation
and filled the world with beauty and abundance.

Today we grieve for forests burning,
for homes and livelihoods lost,
for wildlife fleeing flames,
for firefighters and first responders risking their lives,
and for communities living with fear, smoke, and uncertainty.

Comfort those who have lost so much.
Protect those who stand in the path of danger.
Give strength to exhausted firefighters, emergency workers, and volunteers.
Grant wisdom to leaders as they respond to these disasters and prepare for those yet to come.…

The sun and moon appear red with anger from the smoke of fires, oceans are weeping and Earth is mourning losses of God’s creation. 

Saving one animal of God’s creation can save many more in the ever present interdependent diverse web of life on Earth. Such is the aim of explorer Joel Sartore’s Photo Ark project, supported by the National Geographic Society. 

Freshwater fanshell mussels rely on darter fish,…for their survival. Mussel larvae attach for weeks to darters, where they absorb vital nutrients to develop. A single mature freshwater mussel can clean up to 15 gallons of water in a day, keeping waterways healthy for all creatures that depend on them, but water pollution and habitat fragmentation have pummeled many of these freshwater mussels to the edge of extinction—they’re the most endangered group of animals in the U.S.…
