The following is a list of the major changes to this web site, with the most recent changes (from 02 November, 2007 ) shown first:

Sermon of 10/28/2007 by Kathy Tobias: Dancing on Behalf of Companionship
Last Monday night, members of the Artists Mission Group who were present for the weekly meeting stood at the back of an ambulance as the EMTs worked around Alan Dragoo. His head was bleeding and bandaged where he had hit it when he tripped over a hidden fault in the sidewalk.
Sermon of 10/21/2007 by Sandra Miller: No "they", only us
How do we embrace the homeless, the single mom, the hungry, the emotionally broken, the prisoner, those that mourn, ourselves, as our own, as God's?
School of Christian Living Schedule for Fall 2007 Semester Session Two
The Beatitudes, offered by offered by The Eyes to See & Ears to Hear Prayer Group & The Learners & Teachers Mission Group and Finding My Call Now, offered by Marjory Bankson, author of Call to the Soul, experienced guide and relational teacher
Sermon of 10/14/07 by Deborah Sokolove: Time to go Dancing
Those of you who are Stewards and were present at last week s meeting know that I wasn t there. I didn t have a good excuse. I wasn t ill. I wasn t out of town. I didn t have a work-related event. I didn t have a family emergency. I was just, plain tired.
Sermon of 10/7/07 by David Lloyd: Recommitting to Be the Body of Christ
In a few moments we will share the elements of Jesus last meal with his followers.  We will say, "This is my body broken for you," and "This is my blood, poured out as the cup of salvation." When she is administering the elements Deborah Sokolove usually says, "Become what you are, the Body of Christ."
Sermon of 09/30/2007 by Jackie Wallen: Prayer
My prayer life is very influenced by what I have learned in my recovery group. One of the most important tools this self-help group offers to people with drinking problems is training in how to pray.
Sermon of 09/16/2007 by Aeren Martinez: Lost and Found
The gospel reading today includes the parable of the lost sheep. In that teaching Jesus illustrates that if a person has 100 sheep and looses one he will leave the 99 in search of the one he's lost... let's imagine for a moment being that lost sheep.
School of Christian Living Schedule for Fall 2007 Semester Session One
"The Sacred Circle of Living and Dying", offered by Jesse Palidofsky and the Living Water mission group
"Becoming a Dialogical Community", offered by Rebecca Sears
Sermon of 08/26/2007 by Aeren Martinez: You're Not Done Yet
I long to maintain solidarity with those who have been oppressed, but how? The first step I was opening myself to God, the next step is taking time to listen to people once I open myself up to God, and the third step is being with instead of doing for people.
Sermon of 08/19/2007 by Anna Gilcher: Fire
In today’s gospel, we get to hear Jesus speaking to his closest friends about what he’s experiencing, what he’s noticing. Fire! Baptism! What stress I am under! Not peace, but division! I get the sense as I read the passage that he’s really excited about what’s going on--he’s really passionate about it--
Sermon of 08/05/2007 by Deborah Sokolove: Holy One, Holy Three
We don’t talk about Trinitarian theology a lot, here at Seekers. We do talk about God a lot, especially when we are wrestling with what it means that God has a call on our lives....
Sermon of 07/29/2007 by Pat Conover: I Don't Care
Pat responded to the prophetic calling of Hosea by ponderiing the feelings in the phrase, "I don't care." He spoke of being tired and rebellious from taking up prophetic work and ends the sermon by calling up the themes of repentance and thankfullness as grounding for caring and for prophecy.
Sermon of 07/22/2007 by Kate Cudlipp: Small Signs of Hope
I find plenty of reasons to despair these days and would love to see some dazzling, believable message that promises, "All will be well!" In looking for such an assurance, however, I’m finding I can be blind to the small, surprising signs of prophetic hope all around.
Sermon of 07/15/2007 by Anna Gilcher: Prophetic Hope
I love the idea of prophecy being hope-filled, of its being, as Walter Brueggeman puts it and we heard this morning, "the language of amazement which cuts through the despair just as the language of grief is against the numbness." I love the idea; but I can't really wrap my mind around it.
Sermon of 07/08/2007 by Peter Bankson: Call and Companionship
This Sunday we are looking at the many faces of God. Our image of the Trinity -as three different "persons" in one holy being invites me to reflect on companionship and our relationship with God-Creator, Liberator and Holy Spirit.
Sermon of 06/24/2007 by Lia Scholl: Dreamers with Big Dreams
As the introductions told you, my name is Lia Scholl and I run a growing non-profit that ministers to exotic dancers. The short of it is that I train women to be chaplains in strip clubs.
Sermon of 06/17/2007 by Pat Conover: Torture in our Midst
When I proposed to myself, and then to Celebration Circle, that I would preach a sermon about torture I thought to myself, "How hard can this be? I’ve already preached a sermon on seeing what you don’t want to see. I know this spiritual path. I just need to take a few more steps." I didn’t take those steps.
Sermon of 06/10/2007 by John Morris: Right, Left, Straight, Circle
This sermon is inspired by a lot of doubts I’ve had recently about what attitude to take toward the Christian Right or more broadly, toward people who claim to be Christians but live it out in ways I disagree with.
Liturgy of Trinity 2007: Faces of God
Sermon of 05/13/2007 by Marjory Zoet Bankson: This Culture of Generosity
I have always been intrigued by the story of Lydia, which we read today from the Book of Acts. We don't know a lot about her--only that she lived in Philippi and came from Thyatira, ... We can also make some other guesses about Lydia--that she was wealthy, successful and searching for meaning beyond what her money could buy.
Sermon of 05/06/2007 by Anna Gilcher: A New Order
I want to be a poet, to crystallize the longing, to set it forth in words that reach the deepest place in myself and another. I want to feel the Holy Spirit stirring in me, to speak in Her voice, to reach out in radical acceptance of all, sacred and profane. I want to live in a new order. I want to be newly ordered.
Sermon of 04/22/2007 by Margreta Silverstone: Repentance and Forgiveness and Community
Jesus points the way for Peter to mend and restore the relationship. Jesus identifies the restitution that is still needed. The restitution is service. After Peter’s confession, Jesus calls him to feed and tend others. Jesus’ forgiveness asks Peter carry God’s love forward and live that love in relationship to the world and others.
Sermon of 04/15/2007 by Kate Harper: Knowing the Fullness of Life
I've come to see that it's really important to share our faith. We should share all of it, not just the nice bits. Allowing myself to be vulnerable, and letting the scars that I have acquired on my faith journey be seen is important for me, and it might be important for someone else, on their own journey to hear about it.
Liturgy of Easter 2007: The Light of Christ
Seekers School of Christian Living - Second Spring Term 2007
Two classes: 1) Becoming the Voice of God led by Glen Yakushiji. Well sing together and explore liturgy, theology, memory and music at Seekers. 2) Embodied Compassion led by Jacqie Wallen and Anna Gilcher. Using experiential activities, well explore body awareness for empathy and action.
Sermon of 03/25/2007 by Muriel Lipp: Darkness and Light
The rabbi, who was a very warm person, asked me about my faith. I told him I was a Christian, a member of the ecumenical Seekers Church in Washington, descended from the parent Church of the Saviour. He said, "Saviour--then you believe that the Messiah has come?"  "Yes," I said, "we believe that Jesus is the Messiah."   "We," he said, "are still waiting." .
Sermon of 04/08/2007 by Marjory Zoet Bankson: Practicing Resurrection
When we answer, "He is risen indeed," we bear witness to the mystery at the heart of Christianity. We stand at the threshold between the physical life of Jesus, and the mysterious presence of Christ that binds people together beyond family and clan.
Sermon of 04/01/2007 by Deborah Sokolove: Walking Towards the Cross with Jesus
I would like to invite you to join me in this work-in-process, to journey with me in my meditation at each Station of the Cross.
Sermon of 03/11/2007 by Jackie McMakin and Jean Adams: And She Prayed For Me
We are on a hired bus, about to enter Winterveldt. We turn off the wide, paved highway onto a dry dirt road. The driver, an Afrikaner, begins to mutter to himself. We roll along the road until he spots a washout ahead. Slowing to a stop, he stands and announces almost joyfully, that this is as far as he can take us. We should get our baggage, and would have to walk the rest of the way. As he set the bags out onto the road, we heard yelping sounds.
Liturgy of Lent 2007: Darkness in an Age of Glare
Our Legal Bylaws
1995 document added to our Core Documents online collection for reference.
Sermon of 02/18/2007 by Brenda Seat: Transfiguration and the Journey into Lent
I find it intriguing that the two other people with Jesus on that night were Moses and Elijah.  These two men were probably Jesus' heroes.  Men whose stories he had heard from the time he was a little boy, men that he wanted to emulate.
Sermon of 02/11/2007 by Pat Conover: When Good Science and Good Theology Meet
I am pleased that Seekers chose to participate in the nationwide program named Evolution Sunday. More than 500 other congregations are similarly involved this morning.
Seekers School of Christian Living - First Spring Term 2007
Two classes: 1) Communologue is a powerful dialogical process for communication and connection in groups of three or more created from the theory and processes of Imago Relationship Therapy. 2) Introduction to the Hebrew Scriptures is a six-week introduction to the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament).
Sermon of 01/28/2007 by Kate Cudlipp: Prophets and Seekers
Kate, you are anthromorphizing; animals are not human. Kate, you are ignoring how vicious animals are to each other in nature. And on and on. Maybe one marker of authentic prophecy or truth-telling is an immediate desire on the part of the seeker to turn from, deny, or try to explain away-to avoid engaging with what we don't want to hear.
Liturgy of Epiphany 2007: A New Dawn
Seekers Web Snapshot Updated
If you have the MS IE5 or later browser installed, you can download a snapshot (from 16 January 2007) of the Seekers Web Site as a single file (10.5 MB). In IE7, help files need to be "unblocked" after downloading; right click it, choose properties and click "Unblock".
Sermon of 01/07/2007 by Ken Burton: A Homily for Epiphany
Epiphany is about the appearance, shining forth, or revelation of the Holy One. From the post-Easter perspective, Epiphany is about how the Risen Christ is alive now and the fullest manifestation that we know of the Holy One. One of the ways in which that happens is when, as Isaiah insists, we are called by name and told to not be afraid.
I feel secretly guilty about the several coats that I have hanging in my closet when I hear him say to the crowd "If you have two coats, give one away, and if you have food, do likewise."
Liturgy of Advent 2006: The Days are Surely Coming
Sermon of 12/10/2006 by Kjersten Priddy: John Mayer or John the Baptist
N Street Village is by nature a place of both waiting and preparing. Women come to us with all sorts of histories and struggles, and it is our job to help them prepare for their future, while teaching them to be patient and wait in their present. Our 5th floor is a two year residential program that takes women from the streets and walks with them through the recovery process.
Sermon of 12/03/2006 by Ken Burton: A Homily for Advent
The academic year ended badly, with me dropping out of seminary before the end of the spring term, never to return. One of the theological concepts that I picked up during that those hard months s that of the proleptic presence of the Kingdom. This is the idea that the Reign of Christ is both a much-anticipated future event and a real and living present reality.
Sermon of 11/19/2006 by Peter Bankson: Provoke One Another to Love and Good Deeds
I have always had trouble with a lot of gladness. I find it much easier to focus on the need and look for the gladness to sustain me than the other way around. I am beginning to see, however, that there is an equally valid path to call that begins with gladness and leads to a place where that gladness crosses paths with a deep need.
Sermon of 11/12/2006 by David W. Lloyd: Daring to Live The Widow's Dream
The psalmist puts us in the role of the sheep, and in the psalm, we bask in the care of the good shepherd. The truth is that all human beings spend a lot of time being sheep, wanting someone to take care of us.
Sermon of 11/05/2006 by Kate Cudlipp: In the Meantime
When I set out on the Camino de Santiago -- the thousand year-old pilgrimage route across the north of Spain -- I did not need a compelling vision to sustain me because unlike the medieval pilgrims, I did not have to risk my life or my health to undertake the journey.
Sermon of 10/29/2006 by Pat Conover: Seeing What You Don’t Want to See
I'm trying to read various articles about the war in Iraq, the tribal massacres in Congo and the collapse of hope in Afghanistan. I have tried read with a caring heart. It makes the reading go very slow. I have to stop and feel about what it would be like to live with your lips cut off, to live with having your children tortured and killed in front of you, to be tortured and killed while wearing a hood by CIA operatives .
Seekers School of Christian Living - Second Fall Term 2006
Living Water Mission Group is leading a Mini-Mission Group Experience for those who are interested in trying out a mission group and Pat Conover and Kate Cudlipp are leading the class "Living Issues in Christian Theology," using existentialism and dialectical thinking to explore theological questions that class members have been exploring.
Liturgy of Jubilee 2006: Dreaming Anew
Sermon of 10/22/2006 by Anna Gilcher: Fundamental Wildness
I can be fully alive. I can choose not to try to fix or cope or strategize or domesticate. I can sit with you and listen, in awe at how great love and great hurt can co-exist. And in this way, I can be in my fundamental wildness and allow you to be in yours, and know that we are all joined in that place of wildness, of things just-as-they-are.
Sermon of 10/15/2006 by Deborah Sokolove: Saying "Yes" to God
In the end, something wonderful happens. Job, still on his ash-heap, still covered with boils, but now in a new relationship with God - this Job says "yes" to God, and prays for his hapless friends. The would-be pastors have become the sheep, and the apparently wayward sheep takes a turn at being the shepherd, interceding with God on their behalf.
