You Must Be Present to Win: Six Weeks with God, Benedict, and Each Other

taught by Ron Arms

"Where shall I look for Enlightenment?" the disciple asked. "Here," the elder said. "When will it happen?" the disciple wanted to know. It is happening right now," the elder said. "Then why don't I experience it?" the disciple asked. And the elder answered, "Because you do not look." "But what should I look for?" the disciple wanted to know. And the elder smiled and answered, "Nothing. Just look." "But at what?" the disciple insisted." "Anything your eyes alight upon," the elder continued. "Well, then, must I look in a special kind of way?" the disciple said. "No," the elder said. "Why ever not?" the disciple persisted. And the elder said quietly, "Because to look you must be here. The problem is that you are mostly somewhere else."

Come be quiet. Listen. Look. Experience lectio divina. And share with each other around the themes of recollection, rules, the sacramental day, anchors, way to pray and facing Godward. Using Corinne Ware's Saint Benedict on the Freeway, explore how a lay person living in a collapsing empire shared a rule that still shapes Western civilization. Explore how a rule of life for the 21st century might be relevant to the empire we live in.

"If You Have Ears to Hear." (The Gospel of Mark)

taught by Pat Conover and Kate Cudlipp

The Gospel of Mark is the shortest of the four New Testament Gospels and is believed to have been a primary source for the longer Gospels of Matthew and Luke. One of the noticeable themes in Mark is the inability of Jesus' disciples to understand what they see and hear. Much of the time they just don't get it!

The class will explore what it is the disciples-and we-are invited to "get" in the life and teachings of Jesus. What does it mean to call ourselves "Christians" and what difference does that make in our lives and in the life of the world?

We will read the Gospel over the course of the six weeks of class and engage with it in a variety of ways, including written homework and small and whole-group work in class. Come learn with others how to "listen."
