Pilgrimage Preparation

This is a four-week course in the Seekers School of Christian Living that will begin on Tuesday, June 7 and end on Tuesday, June 28. A course description is below. We will gather in the dining room at Carroll Street for dinner at 7:00. The class will begin at 7;45 and end at 9:30.

Although the particular focus of this class will be the upcoming Faith at Work pilgrimage to Guatemala, the class is open to anyone interested in making a pilgrimage now or in the future. Please come with your hearts open to receiving the gift of others who are different from yourself.

Being with a group of fellow pilgrims in a new part of the world will test your resilience and curiosity, deepen your spiritual life and open your heart in new ways. You can count on it!  We'll have pictures from earlier trips and hope that previous pilgrims will join us for some of these sessions. In these four weeks, we plan to

  1. Introduce you to the country, people and places that we'll visit...and answer practical questions.
  2. Hear Ron Arms to share his experience as Peace Corps Director there during the Civil War (which ended with peace accords in 1996);
  3. Watch a video about the church's role in the war and peace process...and discuss some of the human rights issues.
  4. Meet one of the PAVA board members who lives here in the DC area. (PAVA is the organization thru which our work project is organized.)

Course Description

Compassionate Communication is based on the understanding that our habitual ways of communicating often do not serve us well. In fact, we talk and act in ways that actually make it LESS likely for us to connect with others, and to get what we most desire and value for our lives.

This six-week class in the Seekers School of Christian Living will review the basic approaches for structuring non-violent communication, and will then deepen our ability to build relationships based on compassion and understanding. We'll build on our existing understanding of how to speak honestly and to listen empathically.

We'll focus on:

Sessions will include plenty of opportunities to practice our skills through small group work and role play.

Those joining the class will be asked to read Dr. Marshall Rosenberg's book, Non-violent Communication: a Language of Life, if they have not already done so.

Jeanne Marcus will facilitate.
