Compassionate Conversation

This is a six-week class that begins on May 25 and runs through June 29. Led by Jeanne Marcus, Kevin Ogle and Elese Sizemore, it will build on the non-violent communication class that was so well received by the community last January. We will gather for dinner, catered by the Potter's House, at 7:00. The class will run from 8:00 until 9:30. We will meet initially at 2025 Massachusetts Avenue, but will move to our new home on Carroll Street in Takoma Park when that facility is ready. The Tuesday evening schedule at Carroll Street will remain the same. Please feel free to join us if you can attend a majority of the classes. You can sign up during circle on May 23, or by e-mailing us.

We may be aware of the need to break lifetime communication habits that are not serving us well, but doing so can seem extremely difficult. This class offers an opportunity to learn new ways to communicate. Nonviolent conversation asks us to speak clearly about our own feelings, needs and desires, and to listen empathically to the feelings and needs of others. Alas, these conversational behaviors are hardest to do exactly when they're the most necessary-when we're confronted with opinions and values that aren't our own or with actions that have upset us.

In this class we will create opportunities to practice the of Non-Violent Communication insights developed by Marshall Rosenberg. We'll practice speaking clearly about ourselves, and learn how to engage in empathic listening. We'll discuss how to work with anger-our own and others. Finally, we'll look at possible new ways of engaging in dialogue around social issues in ways that make it more likely to find common ground.
