Seekers School of Christian Living
Tuesday nights, February 11-April 29, 2003
at
2025 Mass Avenue
The Seekers School of Christian Living (SCL) will offer two courses beginning on February 10, one week later than previously announced. Two more courses will be offered beginning in March, with details about them available next month.
Together we will travel the main highway of Christian doctrine, noting generally recognized signposts that point to the nature of God and humanity, faith, the Bible, Jesus’ resurrection, the role of the Church, and other topics. Since Christians have not always agreed about these concepts, discussions and homework assignments will identify speed bumps, narrow lane/no shoulder areas, work zones, and exit ramps in creeds, denominational articles of faith, and statements by clergy. For those moving towards becoming Stewards of Seekers Church, this course will satisfy the Christian doctrine requirement.
The Psalms is the biblical book that has the most imagery, the most passion, and the most sayings that have entered popular culture. In this six-week class, we will explore the Psalms as poetry and music. We will also discuss the imagery and passion of the Psalms, and the Psalms' relevance to our public and private worship. We will seek to understand the desires of the authors, and to find modern parallels. We will work to appreciate the courage and spiritual wisdom of the ancient writers even as we acknowledge their expressions of hatred, fear, and grief. Using a variety of formats, both written and not, we will begin developing our own Psalms. This course, in conjunction with another six week course, meets the Hebrew Scriptures requirement for those moving towards becoming Stewards of Seekers Church.
SCL participants come together at 2025 Massachusetts, meeting for dinner and a meditation at 7:00 p.m, followed by class from 8:00 to 9:30. Dinner will again be catered by the Potter's House, at a cost of four dollars per person per meal. Initially, classes will be held at 2025 Massachusetts Avenue. The SCL will move to Carroll Street as soon as the new facility is available.
