Seekers School of Christian Living
Tuesday nights, February 11-April 29, 2003
at
2025 Mass Avenue
The School of Christian Living is a way to explore your faith journey in the company of other pilgrims. You can expect weekly reading and written assignments, prayerful connection with others in the class and a chance to experience some important aspects of mission group life.
As Christians, we believe that Jesus' life and teaching are a revelation of God. The Gospels are crucial to our knowing and understanding his life and teaching. But to fully understand the Gospels' meaning, we must try to see them in the context of the Jewish Palestine of Jesus' time, and also in the historical context of the Gospel writers. Studying Jesus' life in context can bring new insight and depth to our personal faith; and can enrich and challenge our thinking about justice, power and violence. [Course fulfills New Testament requirement]
This course will review the classic and emerging Christian approaches to war and peace. Each approach will be presented respectfully with both strengths and weaknesses considered. The spiritual challenges to be faced in choosing any approach will be a focus of discussion in each class. After a class on facing the powers and principalities, there will be classes on pacifism, crusade/liberation, just war, and just peace approaches followed by a class that considers the special context and opportunities of being a peacemaker in the United States.
SCL participants come together at 2025 Massachusetts, meeting for dinner and fellowship at 7:00 p.m. There is a suggested contribution of $4 for the meal. In addition, each participant will share some of the tasks of clean-up after the meal, and of offering after-dinner meditation that helps transition to our class time. The classes begin at 8:00 and end by 9:30 p.m. Class size is limited to 12 participants. These classes are appropriate for anyone of high school age or older. For the sake of continuity and community-building, participants are requested to attend all sessions. For more information, please sign up with Margreta after worship on Sunday, or if you live in the Washington DC area, please Write us.
