Seekers School of Christian Living
Tuesday nights, Sept 24 - Dec 10, 2002
at 2025 Mass Avenue

Fall Session

The School of Christian Living is a way to explore your faith journey in the company of other pilgrims.  You can expect weekly reading and written assignments, prayerful connection with others in the class and a chance to experience some important aspects of mission group life.

Please come for dinner at 7:00pm. The dinner is offered as an important way to share table fellowship and community with others. There is a minimal charge for the meal.  In addition, everyone is expected to help in the celebration of dinner. Tasks may include assisting in preparation of the meal or cleanup.  At the close of the meal, a meditation is offered by one of the class participants. The meditation aids in the transition from the outside world to the centering spirit of church community.

Classes begin promptly at 8:00 and end by 9:30pm at 2025 Mass Avenue.  Class size is limited to 12 participants.    For the sake of continuity, participants are requested to attend all sessions.

1. HEBREW PROPHETS - Dave Lloyd & Ken Burton                                 (Hebrew Scriptures)

Walter Bruggeman defines Biblical prophecy as nurturing, nourishing, and evoking an alternative consciousness to that of the dominant culture, and inspiring God's people to a new creation.  Join us in exploring what the great prophets, especially Amos, Hosea, Isaiah, and Jeremiah, spoke to the kingdoms of Israel and Judah and what they may be saying to us more than 2000 years later.  This is a 12 week course that satisfies the requirements for a class in the Hebrew Scriptures.

2. BECOMING FIRE - Kate Cudlipp & Marjory Bankson                          (Christian Growth)

The introduction to A Guide to Seekers Church says, "The life of Seekers Church is based on an amazing belief: each one of us is called by God to a particular work in the world that helps bring about God's vision for all of creation." In this class we will ask each other, "Do we really believe what we say? And if we do, what implications does this have for how we live as individuals and as a community? What will it take for us, individually and communally, to become fired up by God's vision? What shadows must we confront and what gifts must we claim to respond ever more freely to the true calls on our lives?"

We will engage biblical stories, other written resources, personal experiences, and non-verbal means to explore both the varied ways calls come to us and the blockages to receiving those calls. We will seek, together, to nurture the tiny seeds and emerging sprouts of call among us so that we grow in our ability to help bring about God's vision for all of creation. And we will explore how we can be a community in which caring for call-supporting call in all its stages-is at our core.
