Seekers School of Christian Living
Seekers School of Christian Living
Fall Session (Sept 18 - Dec 4, 2001)
The School of Christian Living is a way to explore your faith journey in the company of other pilgrims. You can expect weekly reading and written assignments, prayerful connection with others in the class and a chance to experience some important aspects of mission group life.
Dinner begins at 7:00pm, costs $2/week and is prepared by two school participants working together. Everyone (except teachers) is expected to help with at least one meal during the session. Each week a meditation is offered at the close of the meal to aid in the transition from the outside world to the centering spirit of church community.
Classes begin promptly at 8:00 and end by 9:30pm at 2025 Mass Avenue. Class size is limited to 12 participants.
This 12-week course will focus on Jesus' "good news," attempting to find our individual answers to several questions. These include Jesus' questions to the disciples: "Who do people say that I am?" and "Who do you say that I am?" and such others as "Why did people say that about Jesus?" and "Is the story of Jesus good news for me?" We will read the Gospel of Mark and excerpts from Paul's epistles to the early Christian congregations and add a few excerpts from the Book of Acts. Assignments for homework will include the scripture and written journaling to share in class.
In the first six weeks, we'll consider call and who's calling, creativity, commitment, authority, accountability and stewardship-and structures at Seekers that do (and don't) support your spiritual life. * Then we'll delve into leadership, discovery of gifts, mission, solitude and inclusion. As a text, we'll use selected readings from the Bible and other sources along with the hot-off-the-press Guide to Seekers Church.
((* On October 30, men who want to take the following class may shift out of "Secrets" and anyone who wants to join may do so at this point.})
(6 Weeks: Oct 30-December 4)
There are definite challenges to claiming the fullness of the male spiritual journey in a feminist church like Seekers. And there are many double binds for "sensitive" men to face, living in a culture such as ours which is in major transition regarding its understanding of masculinity and femininity. This is a class from a pro-feminist perspective for men who are willing to engage in some playfully passionate "shadow dancing". We will consider a number of questions related to the task of following our authentic faith and life journeys as men of (or considering) Seekers. There will be readings, sharing our stories, chanting/singing and a safe place for men to explore whatever comes up for us.
