[Seekers] [Write us] [Course Offerings]
The School of Christian Living offers a way to create deeper community for those who are already a part of Seekers and an opportunity to explore the Seekers concept of church for those who are new. You can expect weekly reading and written assignments, prayerful connection with others in the class and a chance to experience some important aspects of mission group life.
Dinner begins at 7:00pm, costs $2/week and is prepared by two school participants working together. Everyone (except teachers) is expected to help with at least one meal during the session. Each week a meditation is offered at the close of the meal to aid in the transition from the outside world to the centering spirit of church community.
Classes begin promptly at 8:00 and end by 9:30pm at 2025 Mass Avenue. Class size is limited to 12 participants.
Two 6-week segments qualify as one full course for Steward’s preparation.
For the sake of continuity, participants are requested to attend all sessions.
February 20-March 27
1. INTRODUCTION TO THE HEBREW SCRIPTURES – Cynthia Dahlin & David Lloyd (OT credit)
This six-week course is an introduction to the Hebrew Scriptures. Rather than take an historical approach to the people of Israel, we will explore such themes as God’s immanence and transcendence, God’s acting in history, covenant and call, sin and atonement, and God’s love of justice for the oppressed. This course is a useful backdrop for the course on Psalms offered the following six weeks.
2. AMAZING GRACE: A Lexicon of Faith – Marjory Bankson (Doctrine)
Finding words to express our relationship with God is an ongoing process. We’ll draw on biblical and historical traditions as well as personal experience for this exploration of basic beliefs at Seekers.
Incarnation -- What's a Body For?
Christ -- Another form of Jesus?
Sacrament and Sacred Times
Trinity -- Do Names Make a Difference?
Sin and Grace
Doctrine, Belief and Belonging
April 3 - May 8
1. PSALMS -- Margreta Silverstone & Dan Phillips (OT)
The Psalms is a book that has the most imagery, the most passion, and the most sayings that have entered popular culture. In this six-week class, we will explore the Psalms as poetry and music. We will also discuss the imagery and passion of the Psalms, and the Psalms' relevance to our public and private worship. We will seek to understand the desires of the authors, and to find modern parallels. We will work to appreciate the courage and spiritual wisdom of the ancient writers even as we acknowledge their expressions of hatred, fear, and grief. Using a variety of formats, both written and not, we will begin developing our own Psalms.
2. “APPLIED” AMAZING GRACE – Jeanne Marcus (Doctrine)
When God’s presence breaks into our lives, we may ponder how God calls us to live out our response in this world. But trying to live the Good News faithfully can be a complicated business. Christianity has offered its own set of understandings about what God wants from and for us. Continuing to use Scripture, Christian tradition and personal experience, we will explore some of the ways Christians have thought about the issues of a life lived in faithful response to God’s calling. These include [tentatively]:
Worship and prayer
Forgiveness
Faith, freedom and obedience
Doing Theology
Living our hope within history
Church: Priesthood of All Believers
